What is a .dev domain?

The .dev domain is a generic extension opened to the public in 2019 by Google Registry, designed for developers, technical teams and everything involved in building software. The name says it all: a .dev address tells people immediately that there is code, tooling, documentation or a technical portfolio behind it.

Its most important quirk: the entire .dev extension is on the browsers' HSTS preload list. Modern browsers open any .dev site only over HTTPS, and a plain HTTP version will not load at all. So you need a valid SSL certificate from day one, for example a free one from Let's Encrypt. We host the DNS zone for free with a record editor, and renewals are taken automatically from your account credit.

Who a .dev domain suits

  • Developers who want a personal portfolio or tech blog (yourname.dev)
  • Open-source projects, libraries and documentation sites
  • Developer tools, APIs and technical SaaS products
  • Engineering teams that want separate domains for staging and test environments
  • Programming communities, meetups and conferences

Registration rules for .dev

  • No residency requirement: anyone can register a .dev
  • HSTS preloaded at the extension level: the site must be served over HTTPS with a valid certificate or browsers refuse to connect
  • Names use letters, digits and hyphens; the registry may reserve certain names or price them as premium
  • Beware of old local setups that used ".dev" as an internal test domain: on a real .dev they can cause conflicts

Tips for choosing a .dev name

  • Set up the SSL certificate before announcing the site: without it visitors see only an error
  • yourname.dev is an excellent calling card for a developer: short, professional and easy to put on a CV
  • For local test environments use reserved names such as .test or .localhost, not .dev
  • A cloud server with one-click Coolify gives you Git deploys and automatic HTTPS certificates for your .dev domain

Questions about .dev domains

Why does my .dev site not open over HTTP?

Because the .dev extension is on the browsers' HSTS preload list. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge know in advance that any .dev domain must be reached over HTTPS only and will not attempt an unencrypted connection. The fix is a valid SSL certificate, such as a free Let's Encrypt one.

Do I have to be a developer to register a .dev?

No. The extension has no eligibility restrictions, so anyone can register one. It is perceived as an extension for development and technology, though, so it fits technical projects, developer portfolios and products for developers best.

I used .dev for local testing. Does that still work?

If you ran local sites on addresses like project.dev, browsers now force them to HTTPS, and a real .dev domain can clash with them. For local development, the standards reserve names such as .test and .localhost, which will never be public domains.

How do I get an HTTPS certificate for my .dev domain?

The simplest route is a free Let's Encrypt certificate, issued automatically by your web server (Caddy, or Nginx with Certbot) or by platforms like Coolify. Add an A record pointing to your server in the DNS editor, and the certificate is issued within seconds once the domain resolves.

How much does a .dev domain cost?

Registering a .dev domain costs €17.99 for the first year and €25.47 for each renewal, VAT excluded, paid from your account credit. There is no setup fee and DNS hosting is included.

For how long can I register a .dev domain?

You can register a .dev domain for 1 to 10 years at once. After that it renews automatically from your credit a month before expiry, and you get an email if your credit is short.

Can I transfer my .dev domain to cloudlinux.ro?

Yes. Transferring a .dev domain costs €25.47 and normally adds a year to its expiry. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the transfer code and start the transfer from the Domains section of your console.

Can I host a website on my .dev domain with you?

Yes. Launch a cloud server billed by the hour, pick a one-click app such as WordPress, Ghost or Nextcloud, and point your .dev domain to it from the DNS editor. The domain also works with any server you run elsewhere.
