What is a .es domain?

The .es domain is the country code extension of Spain, managed by Red.es, a public entity under the Spanish government, through its registry service (dominios.es). It is the preferred address of Spanish companies and institutions and immediately signals that a site speaks to a Spanish audience.

At first .es had strict rules and was hard to obtain. The rules were liberalised in 2005, and today individuals and companies both inside and outside Spain can register a .es. Red.es also accepts characters specific to Spanish and Catalan, such as ñ and ç, and besides .es there are second level options like .com.es, .org.es and .nom.es.

Registration rules for .es

  • Registration is open to registrants outside Spain
  • An identification number for the registrant is required (such as an identity card, passport or company tax number)
  • The registry applies its own minimum length rules, and some terms (for example institutional names) are reserved
  • Internationalised characters used in Spanish and Catalan (ñ, ç, á, é and others) are accepted

Tips for choosing a .es name

  • If your name contains ñ, also register a version without it (with "n" or "ny") for visitors without a Spanish keyboard
  • Write in Spanish as used in Spain, not Latin American Spanish, if your audience is in Spain
  • Enter the identification number correctly at registration: the registry can verify it
  • Use .es for Spanish customers and your home domain for other markets, pointing both at the same server

Questions about .es domains

Can I register a .es if I do not live in Spain?

Yes. Since 2005 Red.es has allowed individuals and companies outside Spain to register .es domains. You do not need a Spanish address, provided you supply correct identification details for the registrant.

Which identification number do I need?

The registry asks for a registrant identifier. Spanish residents usually use their NIF or NIE, while foreign registrants can use an identity card, passport or company tax number. The data must match the actual registrant, otherwise the domain can be suspended.

What are .com.es and .nom.es?

They are second level zones under .es: .com.es is meant for commercial activity, .org.es for non-profit organisations and .nom.es for individuals. They are useful alternatives when the name you want is already taken directly under .es.

How do I launch my site on .es?

After registering, add a cloud server with WordPress or another one-click app, connect the domain through the free DNS editor and publish your content. The domain renews automatically from the prepaid credit in your account.

How much does a .es domain cost?

Registering a .es domain costs €7.50 for the first year and €12.99 for each renewal, VAT excluded, paid from your account credit. There is no setup fee and DNS hosting is included.

For how long can I register a .es domain?

You can register a .es domain for 1 to 5 years at once. After that it renews automatically from your credit a month before expiry, and you get an email if your credit is short.

Can I transfer my .es domain to cloudlinux.ro?

Yes. Transferring a .es domain costs €3.00 and normally adds a year to its expiry. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the transfer code and start the transfer from the Domains section of your console.

Can I host a website on my .es domain with you?

Yes. Launch a cloud server billed by the hour, pick a one-click app such as WordPress, Ghost or Nextcloud, and point your .es domain to it from the DNS editor. The domain also works with any server you run elsewhere.
