What is a .org domain?
The .org domain is one of the original internet extensions, created in 1985 for organisations that did not fit the other categories. Over time it became the extension associated with the non-profit world: foundations, associations, NGOs, community and open-source projects. Since 2003 its registry has been the Public Interest Registry (PIR), itself a non-profit.
Although no rule limits .org to non-profits, people associate it with a mission, transparency and the public interest. That is why a .org address can give a cause, a campaign or a community instant credibility. We host the DNS zone for free with a record editor, and renewals are taken automatically from your prepaid account credit, so you do not risk losing the domain.

Registration rules for .org
- The extension is open: anyone can register a .org without proving non-profit status
- Names can be up to 63 characters: letters, digits and hyphens (not at the start or end)
- The registry accepts internationalised names (IDN) for a range of languages
- ICANN policies apply: accurate contact details, transfer locks after registration, and trademark dispute procedures
Tips for choosing a .org name
- For a Romanian NGO, take both: .org for the organisation image and .ro (or .org.ro) for the local audience
- Register the domain in the association's name, not a volunteer's, so you keep control when people move on
- Use a short name or the organisation's acronym, easy to fit on posters and printed material
- A cloud server with WordPress or Nextcloud installed in one click is an affordable base for a website and shared documents

Questions about .org domains
Do I need to be an NGO to register a .org?
No. PIR does not ask for proof of legal status, so individuals, companies and projects can register a .org. Visitors do, however, associate the extension with non-profits, so a company selling products on a .org may set the wrong expectations.
Which should a Romanian NGO choose: .org or .ro?
.ro shows clearly that the organisation works in Romania and helps local relevance. .org highlights the non-profit nature and is useful if you have international partners or funders. Ideally register both, pick one as your main address and redirect the other.
Who runs the .org extension?
The .org registry is the Public Interest Registry, a non-profit founded by the Internet Society, which has operated the extension since 2003 under a contract with ICANN. Accredited registrars sell the names to the public, and the owner controls the domain from their account.
Can we use the .org for our association's email?
Yes. In the included DNS editor you add the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records your email provider requires. Addresses like [email protected] look far more professional than a free mailbox and show donors that the organisation is serious.
How much does a .org domain cost?
Registering a .org domain costs €10.96 for the first year and €22.58 for each renewal, VAT excluded, paid from your account credit. There is no setup fee and DNS hosting is included.
For how long can I register a .org domain?
You can register a .org domain for 1 to 10 years at once. After that it renews automatically from your credit a month before expiry, and you get an email if your credit is short.
Can I transfer my .org domain to cloudlinux.ro?
Yes. Transferring a .org domain costs €21.73 and normally adds a year to its expiry. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the transfer code and start the transfer from the Domains section of your console.
Can I host a website on my .org domain with you?
Yes. Launch a cloud server billed by the hour, pick a one-click app such as WordPress, Ghost or Nextcloud, and point your .org domain to it from the DNS editor. The domain also works with any server you run elsewhere.
